Demixing smells — fast inference in olfaction Supplementary Material

چکیده
Because of the delta-function in the prior, performing efficient variational inference in our model is, as far as we know, difficult. Therefore, we smooth the delta-function, and replace it with a Gamma distribution, δ(cj) −→ Γ(cj |α0, β0). In the limit α0 → 0 and β0 → ∞ we recover the true prior. However, when these two parameters are finite, absent odors – odors with sj = 0 – have non-zero concentrations. To correct for this, we choose α0 and β0 so that there is an effective background

Demixing odors - fast inference in olfaction
The olfactory system faces a difficult inference problem: it has to determine what odors are present based on the distributed activation of its receptor neurons. Here we derive neural implementations of two approximate inference algorithms that could be used by the brain. One is a variational algorithm (which builds on the work of Beck. et al., 2012), the other is based on sampling. Importantly...
متن کاملSmelling directions: Olfaction modulates ambiguous visual motion perception
Senses of smells are often accompanied by simultaneous visual sensations. Previous studies have documented enhanced olfactory performance with concurrent presence of congruent color- or shape- related visual cues, and facilitated visual object perception when congruent smells are simultaneously present. These visual object-olfaction interactions suggest the existences of couplings between the o...
متن کاملIs Trilled Smell Possible? How the Structure of Olfaction Determines the Phenomenology of Smell
Smell 'sensations' are among the most mysterious of conscious experiences, and have been cited in defense of the thesis that the character of perceptual experience is independent of the physical events that seem to give rise to it. Here we review the scientific literature on olfaction, and we argue that olfaction has a distinctive profile in relation to the other modalities, on four counts: in ...

1 Stationary Points of the Log-Likelihood In this section, we briefly explain why the log-likelihood in Luce's model has a unique stationary point, that at the ML estimate. Recall that we assume that the comparison graph G D is strongly connected. The log-likelihood is given by
متن کاملOlfaction in a hunter-gatherer society: Insights from language and culture
According to a widely-held view among various scholars, olfaction is inferior to other human senses. It is also believed by many that languages do not have words for describing smells. Data collected among the Maniq, a small population of nomadic foragers in southern Thailand, challenge the above claims and point to a great linguistic and cultural elaboration of odor. This article presents evid...
